The aim of the Antiquities Department is to discover, maintain, protect and present the cultural heritage of the island. It is responsible for the excavations, on many sites, and the discovery and study of the remnants of older phases of the island's civilisation along with the maintenance and protection of ancient monuments and antiquities such as the reconstruction and maintenance of ancient theatres, sanctuaries, castles, churches, movable antiquities, metallurgy, handicraft, icons, items of religious and popular art, mosaics and frescoes. The legal structure is highly centralised.
The responsibility for architectural heritage lies with the Department of
Town Planning and Housing and the Ministry of the Interior. The responsibility
for the archaeological heritage lies with the Department of Antiquities, which
is part of the Ministry of Communication and Works.
As far as the District and Municipal Authorities are concerned, they have
a duty to co-operate with central public bodies in the conservation and custody
of the Cyprus Heritage situated in their municipal areas or districts, taking
the appropriate measures to avoid deterioration, loss or destruction. In recent
years many conservation initiatives have been borne by local authorities.
