The Department of Town Planning and Housing is the Cyprus government department responsible for the planning and control of physical development and land-use planning. Despite the long delay in the enforcement of the planning legislation, mainly due to the upheaval from the Turkish invasion in 1974 and the military occupation of 37% of the island's territory, physical development in the island is now promoted and controlled on the basis of the provisions of approved and published local plans concerning the urban centres and the Statement of Policy for the Countryside. Development Plans contain policies and measures for the control of physical development with special emphasis on the protection of architectural and cultural local heritage and environment. Part of the Department's activities concerns the Preservation Orders for buildings, group of buildings and areas of architectural, historic, and social and other special value.
