The Archaeological Research Unit of the Department of History and Archaeology University of Cyprus
Invites you to attend an International Conference on Archaeological Field Survey in Cyprus Past History, Future Potentials
Friday and Saturday, 1 - 2 December 2000

The Conference is being hosted by the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus

Venue: the Bank of Cyprus Headquarters, Main Conference Hall 51 Stasinos Street, Agia Paraskevi (Hilton Hotel Area) Strovolos, Nicosia Cyprus

Main Theme

Nearly half a century ago Hector Catling pioneered the first systematic field survey of Cyprus and was subsequently instrumental in establishing the Cyprus Survey Branch of the Department of Antiquities (1955), then under the directorship of Peter (A.H.S.) Megaw. On the 1st and 2nd of December 2000, the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus will hold a two-day long international Conference on the past history and the future potentials of archaeological survey on the island.
We would like the first day of the Conference to become, when published, a valuable reference on the history of field survey in Cyprus in the 20th century. The second day, on the other hand, aspires to focus on a select group of survey projects from further afield and Prof. John Cherry has agreed to open this session of the proceedings with a key-note lecture on the future of survey in the Mediterranean. The ultimate goal is to scrutinize survey methods in order to determine their potential effectiveness in the environment of Cyprus. We will attempt to reach this goal through a monitored, round-table discussion on Saturday afternoon.

The final program is below. Participation to the Conference is open to the academic community and the interested public. We look forward to seeing you at the Conference.
