Global Topograhic (GTOPO30) Tile Data (http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/gtopo30.html)
Kimberly Maeyama- kimbe_be@yahoo.com

This particular geographic data source is the result of a cooperative effort by the USGS EROS Data Center and many other international and national institutions.

Nominally this data represents a "horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). This data is downloadable for free from the above listed URL address and can be easily viewed through the freeware 3DEM version 8.4.4, which is defined as "demonstration for terrain visualization and flyby animation". This particular freeware software allows the user to visually view the GTOPO30 data as a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), explore this data in both 2-D and 3-D, as well as allowing Global Positioning System (GPS) waypoints to be imported and observable en mass as an overlay on the base DEM. GPS waypoint data can also be manually plotted over the base DEM image, as well as immediate downloadable data via direct GPS unit link-up. The only main drawback to this software is that it is designed to be a viewer and so no true data manipulation capability is provided.

For data manipulation of both DTED 0 and GTOPO30 data, the software program TerraBase II final version 3.0 may be used. Typical of the U.S. Government, a somewhat confusing situation has resulted in that one can also download another TerraBase software version - MicroDEM/Terrabase II version 4.0. As of now, the major differences between the two "related" software programs are not entirely discernable, though some tasks which can be performed easily in the beta version of TerraBase II version 3.0 cannot be performed within the MicroDEM/TerraBase II version 4.0 software. Since I have only recently become aware of the MicroDEM/TerraBase II software, I have not (as of yet) been able to explore both versions extensively enough to make sufficient comment. What can be said is that this software offers many manipulation capabilities to the user and most importantly, export capability so that either DTED 0 or GTOPO30 data can be exported in formats that can be accepted by any of the current GIS software programs (i.e. ArcView and MapInfo).

An issue of importance is that of actual coastline. When using TerraBase II software (either version), the delineation of the actual, physical coastline is not made upon the generation of acontour overlay. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain another dataset, this time provided by the USGS Coastine Extractor website, though specific latitude/longitude information is required.
