Guidance on working with
GTOPO30 Tile Data & DTEDŽ 0 Data
It was not mentioned
before, but a variety of GIS data can be obtained for free on the WWW at DataDepot.com,
including DTEDŽ 0.
After you have visited either site to identify and download either GTOPO30
Tile Data or DTEDŽ 0
Data files, and have successfully dowloaded and installed TerraBase
II, some special steps are required in order for you to be able to work with
either data file(s).
Both GTOPO30 Tile Data & DTEDŽ 0 data files must be "imported" into
TerraBase II (regardless of version). The steps to do this are listed below.
Run TerraBase II
Click "IN-OUT" button on main toolbar, the "Data Manipulator" window will appear.
Select "Import" from the main toolbar of the Data Manipulator window.
Select either "GTOPO30" or "Compressed WWW downloads - DTEDŽ 0"
If using GTOPO30 Tile Data, only one cycle should suffice as GTOPO30 data typically comes in one large area "tile".
For DTEDŽ 0 Data, it maybe necessary for you to merge together several different data files in order to create a single DEM. The steps for this process are listed below.
Run TerraBase II
Click "IN-OUT" button on main toolbar, the "Data Manipulator" window will appear
Select "Merge" from the main toolbar of the Data Maniplator window.
Select "DEMs"; the "Open Merging" window will appear.
Navigate to where the downloaded GTOPO30 Tile Data or DTEDŽ 0 Data files are stored on your computer
Select the appropriate "file type" and open file.
TerraBase II will automatically leave the "Open Merging" window active after you've completed the process. Since this is a merging process, you will need to repeat steps 5-6 until all the appropriate files have been opened, after which time you can select "cancel" and a "Merged DEM" window prompt should then be observable. You simply name the DEM file and save, the result will be the automatic display of your newly created DEM.
As you will see inside the Data Manipulator window right next to the "Import" selection, is the "Export" selection. Once you have your complete DEM generated, you can then choose "Export", select the format in which you wish to export and TerraBase will automatically generate the files associated. Once you have exported, you can then open your GIS program and find its "import data" function. Some special instruction maybe required for you to import this data into your GIS, particularly the parameters of the data, its projection, etc.
