Project Description
The Polis-Pyrgos Archaeological
Project (PAP) was organized in 1993 and its principal objectives were focused
on the investigation of the nature and extent of human occupation and resource
utilization in the NW part of Cyprus, in particular on the coastal plain between
Polis and Kato Pyrgos villages, and in the time span from Neolithic period
to Modern times.
This pioneer field survey in an almost uninvestigated area brought to light over 80 new archaeological sites, which dated from Early Chalcolithic through the Bronze Age, into the Geometric, Archaic, Roman, Byzantine and Medieval periods. Thanks to it has been produced a new distribution map of the ancient sites which added a lot to the uderstanding of pattern of occupation in the NW part of the island. Currently among the main tasks there are also topographical investigations of the several PAP sites which have been selected for future excavations as well as documentation and study of survey finds (ceramics, stone tools) for publishing.
