La Missione Archeologica Italiana di Pyrgos-Cipro del C.N.R. (ISMEA)

The Italian Archaeological Mission at Pyrgos/Mavroraki during the 1998 excavation season discovered a Bronze Age copper workshop in the settlement area. Archaeological evidence, stratigraphic data and chemical analysis demonstrate that all the most important phases of producing copper, starting from the minerals collected in the surrounding territory, have been carried out in the Mavroraki workshop from the Late Chalcolithic period till the Middle Bronze Age. The Pyrgos installation with its outfit of facilities to work the metal is the most ancient found in the Mediterranean area.
